tribal-culture05Bomvu Paradise in Coffee Bay works closely with the local Bomvana tribe. Bomvu means red: the tribe is characterized by their red dress and clay used to dye their clothes. We focus on community participation and the majority of our staff are from the local area. We are grateful to have been accepted by this amazing tribe and feel privileged to share it with you.

Drum Workshop - Make your own!

drum-workshop08Bomvu Drum Farm manufactures drums from the Agave tree which is prolific in the region and borders the entire property. Guests at Bomvu have the opportunity to make their own unique, lightweight African drum at our Drum Farm taught by experienced drum makers and players. It usually takes between three to five days to produce a single drum, after which drum enthusiasts are taught how to tune and finally play their drum.

World Class Surfing and Surf School

surf05Coffee Bay’s sub-tropical climate offers a year round beach culture with three beaches within walking distance.

Learn to surf where turtles and dolphins play at a remote, first class surf location with no crowds, warm water, beginner waves and experienced instructors – what more could anyone want?!

All equipment provided. We also have surfboards and wetsuits for hire and provide body boards free of charge.

 
Horse Trails

Our cross-country horseriding trails offer experienced riders the opportunity to fulfill their wildest adventure fantasies! Become as one with your horse and challenge the spectacular coastline. Swim with your horse through the mighty Mthatha River to our exclusive paradise island, continue the experience galloping along stretches of golden untouched beaches to overnight in Mdumbi, rated South Africa’s No. 1 beach by Getaway magazine, before returning back to base the following day.

  • Cultural Tour - Visit a traditional rural Xhosa village and meet members of the local community on this guided tour
  • Hole in the Wall Hiking Trail - Guided hike along wind-swept hills and cliffs, through indigenous forest and onto untouched beaches – stunning!
  • Mapuzi River Mouth Trail - Your local guide will take you along the stunning coastline with secluded beaches and majestic cliff faces - spot dolphins, whales and sometimes sharks!
  • Mthatha River Mouth Trail - Take a few rand for the boatman who will take you across the river mouth and can also help you explore mangrove swamps and bird watch.
